According to a map made by ILGA Europe, Romania is the only country in the south-east of Europe that allows fertility treatment for lesbian women and it is much more tolerant than Italy, Greece, Poland, Ukraine or Bulgaria.
International human rights documents:Romania has ratified Protocol No. 12 to the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, moreover Romania was a signatory to the 2007 UN Declaration on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity.
Criminal law:Consenting same-sex sexual acts are legal. The age of consent is equal for all sexual acts.
Anti-discrimination:Discrimination on the basis on sexual orientation is prohibited in areas of social security, health care, social advantages, education, good and services and housing.
Partnership recognition:Romania does not provide any legal recognition of same-sex partnerships.
Parenting rights:Neither joint nor second parent adoption is available to same-sex couples in Romania. Medically assisted insemination is available to lesbian couples.
Law on hate and violence:Sexual orientation is included in the law on hate and violence, and is recognised as aggravating factor.
Freedom of assembly:
Pride events have been banned in 2005 and 2006.
